October is moving right along, and Palm Beach County has a few interesting ways to shake up the usual weekday routine.

This week brings a downtown pumpkin patch, an unusual event where people become living books, a new theatrical production, and live music along the waterfront. Whether you're looking for something family-friendly or an excuse to get out after work, there's a little variety on the calendar.

Here are five events worth checking out this week:

A LITTLE SLICE OF FALL IN DOWNTOWN

Florida might not be giving us much in the way of sweater weather, but Mr. Jack O' Lanterns Pumpkin Patch is doing its part to make downtown West Palm Beach feel a little more like October.

The seasonal pumpkin patch has returned with pumpkins in all shapes, colors and sizes, along with fall-themed photo opportunities and family-friendly activities. Whether you're looking for the perfect pumpkin to carve or simply want to get a few seasonal photos, it's an easy outing that doesn't require clearing your entire afternoon.

The patch will remain open through November 1, giving everyone plenty of opportunities to stop by before Halloween.

Where: 419 Lakeview Avenue, West Palm Beach
When: Monday–Thursday, October 12–15 | 11:00 AM–8:00 PM

Good fit for: Families, fall photos, pumpkin shopping and anyone ready to embrace the season.

START YOUR TUESDAY ON THE MOVE

Not everyone loves the idea of getting out of bed early to exercise, but doing it with a group might make it a little easier.

YouRun Crew meets Tuesday morning for a community run through downtown West Palm Beach. The group welcomes runners of all experience levels, whether you're training for a race, trying to build a routine or simply looking for some company while getting a few miles in.

The best part? It's free, and you don't have to be the fastest person there to participate.

Where: Arya Tea Bar, 508 Clematis Street, West Palm Beach
When: Tuesday, October 13 | 7:00–8:00 AM
Cost: Free

Good fit for: Runners, fitness enthusiasts and anyone looking to meet new people.

WHAT IF YOU COULD BORROW A PERSON INSTEAD OF A BOOK?

This might be one of the more unusual events happening in Palm Beach County this week.

The Human Library comes to Fern Street Chess Park Wednesday evening, offering visitors an opportunity to sit down and have meaningful conversations with people whose life experiences may be very different from their own.

Instead of checking out a traditional book, participants select an "Open Book" — a volunteer willing to share personal stories, experiences and perspectives. The idea is to challenge stereotypes, encourage understanding and create conversations that might not happen otherwise.

It's something different from the usual festivals and markets, and potentially one of the most memorable events on this week's calendar.

Where: Fern Street Chess Park, 402 S. Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach
When: Wednesday, October 14 | 5:30–8:30 PM
Cost: Free

Good fit for: Curious minds, meaningful conversations and anyone interested in hearing a different perspective.

A FAMILY DRAMA TAKES THE STAGE

If you've been looking for an excuse to spend an evening at the theater, Palm Beach Dramaworks has something worth considering.

Alba is a new play inspired by Federico García Lorca's The House of Bernarda Alba. Set in working-class Miami, the story follows a Cuban matriarch determined to maintain control over her family and household while long-buried secrets and complicated relationships begin to surface.

It's a more serious pick for the week, but one that offers something different from the usual dinner-and-movie routine.

Where: Palm Beach Dramaworks, West Palm Beach
When: Wednesday, October 14 | 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM; Thursday, October 15 | 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM

Good fit for: Theater lovers, date night and anyone who enjoys a compelling family drama.

THURSDAY NIGHT SOUNDS BETTER ON THE WATERFRONT

Clematis by Night returns Thursday with another evening of free live music overlooking the West Palm Beach waterfront.

This week's featured band, 56 Ace, brings a mix of country, rock and pop to the Great Lawn. Known for their energetic performances and dance-friendly sound, they're a solid choice for anyone who wants to unwind after work without committing to a big night out.

Bring a lawn chair or blanket, grab something to eat nearby and enjoy a few hours of music along the Intracoastal.

Where: Centennial Square & Great Lawn, 100 N. Clematis Street, West Palm Beach
When: Thursday, October 15 | 6:00–9:00 PM
Cost: Free

Good fit for: Live music, date night, friends and a relaxed Thursday evening.

THAT'S IT FOR THIS WEEK!

From pumpkins and live music to theater and conversations with complete strangers, this week's calendar has a few opportunities to try something outside the usual routine.

And if you're already thinking about the weekend, there's plenty more coming, including another round of Oktoberfest and some bigger community celebrations.
